Ex-Yu Folk

Ex-Yu Folk Music

Ex-Yu Folk refers to traditional and contemporary folk music from the countries of the former Yugoslavia — Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Slovenia. The genre blends regional folk melodies, oriental and Slavic influences, and modern pop or dance rhythms, depending on the period and local style.

In its older form (narodna muzika or starogradska), Ex-Yu Folk features acoustic instruments such as accordion, tamburica, clarinet, and violin, often telling stories about love, rural life, and nostalgia. In later decades, especially from the 1980s onward, it evolved into “newly composed folk” (novokomponovana muzika) and later turbo-folk, combining folk melodies with electronic arrangements and pop sensibilities.

Today, Ex-Yu Folk remains one of the most popular genres across the Balkans, uniting listeners with shared cultural roots and instantly recognizable rhythms and vocals.
